7th Grade Curriculum

7th Grade Bloc: Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies

Reading

  • Part of the seventh grade bloc classes. Content includes selections of classical and contemporary youth literature form a literature text. Skill development focuses on comprehension and vocabulary

Language Arts

  • A component of the seventh grade bloc classes. Continues development of students skills in composition, listening and speaking. Emphasis is on sentence structure and paragraph writing. Spelling is a component of the language arts program. Instruction is organized around special problems that commonly occur in spelling such as using homonyms correctly, spelling words of foreign origin and doubling or not doubling consonants.
Social Studies
  • Part of the seventh grade bloc courses. Areas of study include Europe, Africa and Asia.

Math

  • To increase skill and understanding of the four basic whole number operations with special emphasis on multiplication and division. Additional work with simple fractions and decimals is included. Continued introduction to algebraic notation, statistics and probability are also covered.

Science

  • A life science course. topics include vertebrate and invertebrate animals, the plant kingdom, study of the cell and the various body systems.

P.E.

  • A continuation of skills learned in grade 6. Conditioning and development of basic skills will be introduced through a variety of individual and team activities. Conditioning will be stressed to help the student achieve increased physical fitness.

Health

  • Instruction includes accident prevention and first aid, personal hygiene, physical fitness, nutrition, communicable diseases, substance abuse and human reproduction. Responsibility for personal health, risk management and life skills is emphasized throughout the course.

Survey

  • Art
    A variety of art activities will be explored in creating art projects. Opportunity is provided to become acquainted with concepts and possibilities for creative art.

  • Computers
    A follow-up survey course for 7th graders which reviews the use and care of computer hardware and software. Keyboarding, word processing and software applications are included.

  • Industrial Education
    This c
    ourse builds on the principles taught in 6th grade. MOre power tools and machines are used in the areas of metals, woods and plastics. Hands-on activities allow students to develop a higher degree of skills and appreciation of the industrial technology field.

  • Spanish
    Students learn the basics of Spanish conversation and culture.

Electives

  • Orchestra
    A classes for violin, viola, cello and string bass students who have no previous playing experience or those who have some previous experience. Basic instruction in orchestra playing techniques and orchestra music is emphasized. Advanced orchestra is offered to students with more advanced abilities and experience.

  • Band
    For students who wish to learn to play a wind or percussion instrument. Advanced bands are offered to students with more advanced abilities and experience.

  • Choir
    For students who wish to learn to sing well. No previous knowledge of music is necessary. Advanced choirs are offered to students with more advanced abilities and experience.

  • Spanish
    For students who wish to learn the basics of Spanish conversation and culture.

  • Academic Assistants
    For students who wish to help in a specific teacher's classroom, the office, library or at Moffitt Elemtary. This is only available to 8th graders with good grades and behavior. Selection is determined after submitting an application to the vice principal.
